Nuclear regulatory authority

The independent State Office for Nuclear Safety [2] is responsible for nuclear safety, radiation protection, physical protection, emergency preparedness, RAW, decommissioning, transportation, technical safety of nuclear installations; and control of non-proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, etc. The Radioactive Waste Repository Authority is responsible for management of activities related to the disposal of radioactive waste.

Nuclear activities

There are six VVERs reactor units and three research reactors in operation. An interim spent fuel storage facility and spent fuel storage are also in operation, while another spent fuel storage facility is under construction. Three radioactive waste repositories are in operation and one radioactive waste repository has been closed. There are also uranium mining and milling activities.
